  • The histidine side chain of Haemoglobin is able to bind an H+ ion
  • Has a pKa of 6.8 and forms an important buffer system in the blood
  • Deoxyhaemoglobin is better able to bind H+ than oxyhaemoglobin (contributes to Haldane effect)
