Severity can be graded based upon echocardiographic features:

Valve Area

Maximal Aortic Velocity

Mild

<30 mmHg

>1.5 cm²

<3.0 m/s

Moderate

30–50 mmHg

1.0–1.5 cm²

3.0-4.0 m/s

Severe

(Associated with significant haemodynamic compromise)

>50 mmHg

0.6 -1.0 cm²

>4.0 m/s

Critical

>70 mmHg

<0.6 cm²

>4.0 m/s
