• Forms from the sigmoid and petrosal sinuses 1as a continuation of the jugular bulb
  • Exits the skull via the jugular foramen 1
  • Descends in the carotid sheath 1 with the internal carotid artery and Vagus nerve:
    • Initially starts posteriorly to the carotid artery
    • Lower in the neck becomes lateral and then anterolateral to the carotid artery
  • Terminates at the sternoclavicular joint where it joins the subclavian vein to form the brachiocephalic vein 1
